Stoma Care

The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) Stoma Care Department comprises of two part-time Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS). The overall role of the Stoma Care CNS is to help patients adjust to the physical and psychological challenges of every-day life with a stoma. This is achieved through the development of individual and holistic patient education programs coupled with a trusting working relationship between patients/carers and the Stoma Care CNS.

Specialist nurses require advanced education, training and clinical skills to ensure the patient with a stoma receives the most up to date expert care. The Stoma Care CNS’s deliver pre and post operative nursing care to patients undergoing stoma forming surgery in addition to caring for patients who have ileo-anal pouches and enterocutaneous fistulae.

The MMUH is the National Peritoneal Malignancy centre in addition to being a centre of excellence for colorectal, gynecological and urology disease. These patients can have complex intestinal/abdominal diseases: demonstrating the importance of continued professional development through undertaking further educational programs and networking with Stoma Care CNS colleagues throughout Ireland and the UK .
